Another day, another mass shooting. This time it was a disgruntled 25-year-old bank employee who brought an AR-15 rifle to work. The result? More than a dozen innocents were killed or wounded in Louisville, Kentucky yesterday.
Not surprisingly, President Biden was horrified to hear the news. Once again, he urged Republicans in Congress to join with Democrats and enact stricter gun control laws. And once again, there was silence from GOP lawmakers.
I can't remember the number of times I have suggested convening a Camp David gun summit with representatives from the National Rifle Assn., Second Amendment proponents, law enforcement officials and grieving parents in attendance.
Modeled after President Carter's breakthrough agreement between old warriors Anwar Sadat of Egypt and Menachem Begin of Israel in 1978, Mr. Biden needs to keep the participants at Camp David until they find common ground.
It took the leaders of Egypt and Israel nearly two weeks to work out their historical differences. I'm guessing it would take a week for the NRA and the others to draft one or two new laws that Republicans in Congress could support.
I urge President Biden to convene a Camp David gun summit in the next 30 days.
