If, by some miracle, the Democrats retain control of the House, then its committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection most likely won't be disbanded in January. That would be good news for people coast to coast who love democracy and want to hear directly from former president Donald Trump.
On the other hand, if the GOP prevails and takes back the House, then the likelihood of Trump ever telling the American public about his role leading up to, and including, the riot on Capitol Hill are slim to none.
I am on record as saying Trump wants to answer questions (i.e., testify), but his lawyers are opposed to the idea. With these two conflicting thoughts in mind, here are a few questions I would like answered. They are:
- In the days leading up to Jan. 6, 2021, did Donald Trump participate in meetings, at the White House or any other location, where the issue of creating slates of fake (illegal) electors was discussed? If so, did he approve or disapprove of this tactic?
- Again, in the days leading up to Jan. 6, 2021, did Donald Trump participate in any meetings or conversations where lawyers from both inside the White House and in private practice, along with Republican election officials in various states, specifically tell him the 2020 election results were accurate, and that he absolutely had lost his bid for reelection?
- Can Donald Trump explain why, after 61 of 62 courts rejected his claims of voter fraud, he continued to publicly say the vote was rigged and that he really won the 2020 presidential election? It's one thing to believe this was true, but it's another thing to prove it. Why didn't Trump's lawyers provide the courts with evidence to corroborate his many claims of victory?
Even if he never testifies, I urge Donald Trump to answer these and other questions by submitting an opinion piece to the Wall Street Journal or Washington Times, or by posting a video on Fox News, MSNBC, CNN and various social media outlets. I believe if he did either one, the wounds of Jan. 6 could truly begin to heal. If he doesn't, then the infection that was Jan. 6 will continue to poison America's great democratic experiment.
The choice clearly is up to Donald Trump.
