Every so often I need a deli hit. I've been to Canter's in Los Angeles, Zabar's in New York City, Sherman's in Palm Springs, Benjies in Santa Ana and others; but, if you ask me, Katella Deli in Los Alamitos tops them all. Apparently I'm not the only one who thinks so because the place was packed yesterday.
Katella Deli isn't a tiny hut. It's enormous. And from what I witnessed (i.e., youngsters with their parents to seniors kibitzing with friends) no one seems to care if it takes 45 minutes to an hour to be seated. Maybe that's because everyone knows the food is worth the wait.
One of my "partners in crime" ordered eggs benedict, while the other had chopped liver. Despite my urge for lox and bagels, I simply couldn't resist the steak sandwich. Believe me when I tell you there hardly was a crumb left on anyone's plate.
Over the years I've had great meals at Canter's, Zabar's, etc. If you have eaten there, I'm guessing you have, too. Right now Katella Deli is at the top of my list. Send me a note with the name of your favorite deli.

Langer's in downtown Los Angeles - kitty corner from MacArthur Park on 7th Ave. The bread is made there and the pastrami with chopped liver and russian dressing is the sandwich to die for.
