Thoughts about a Harris-Vance debate
Vice presidential debates typically are non events. This one could be different.
Now that J.D. Vance has been named Donald Trump's running mate, this year's vice presidential debate truly will be consequential (assuming Kamala Harris still is vice president).
Typically, the v.p. debates are ho-hum events best remembered by one-liners. For example:
Here's what Lloyd Bentsen told Dan Quayle in 1988: "I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy."
Or what about Ross Perot's running mate retired Admiral James Stockdale. His opening comment during the 1992 debate was, "Who am I? And why am I here?"
And then there was Sarah Palin, John McCain's 2008 v.p. pick, asking her opponent (some guy named Biden) "Can I call you Joe?"
Before this fall's Harris-Vance debate takes place several things need to be worked out (such as when it will happen, will CBS or Fox be the media sponsor and more). Once those details are locked down, it will be "game on" for both candidates.
Vance is a populist Trump loyalist who will reinforce the campaign's key messages about immigration, deportation and the economy. Given Vance's age, 39, his selection as a running mate now sets him up as a potential presidential candidate in 2028.
Harris is a proven commodity with a strong record of accomplishments. Have you seen the Stock Market lately? She also brings several important constituencies with her (not the least of which is female voters where abortion is on the ballot).
Of course, all this talk about a Harris-Vance debate could be upended if Joe Biden decides to exit the race. Until we know for sure if he's in or out, my suggestion is buckle up. It's going to be a very bumpy ride this summer and fall.

Denny wrote that Harris is a “proven commodity” with a “strong record of accomplishments”.
Does that include all the chaos on the border? That was (is) a major assignment that President Biden tasked her with.
Unlike Denny, I say the VP has a strong record of incompetence . Don’t you?
