When a person loses an election, whether it is in elementary school or in a corporate board room, it means your opponent received more votes than you did. That's how democracy works.
It's true, election results sometimes are overturned, but that tends to be rare. Faced with shifting demographics, Republicans know their ability to win national elections in the future depends on one thing: Reducing the number of voters who support Democrats.
In the past, that was done with what the GOP considered better ideas. Today, there is a different reality: Coast to coast, Republicans are in the process of "fixing" what they claim is a corrupt election process with new laws. They say these laws are needed to protect democracy. I say they are being introduced to undermine democracy.
When the Constitution was ratified, only white men with property were permitted to vote. Next, after the slaves were freed, it was anticipated that they would be allowed to vote. Finally, when women were granted the right to vote a hundred years ago, Americans celebrated what they considered the full bloom of democracy.
I think it's time GOP lawmakers take a step back from their misguided attempts to reform elections and smell the sweet scent of democracy. It may not be perfect, but even a 4th grader understands democracy’s intrinsic value.
