As much as I enjoyed watching Capital One’s The Match earlier this week, I couldn’t help but think the sponsor is missing a huge marketing opportunity. Yes, listening to four great white athletes needle each other on the golf course was fun; but, in my humble opinion, the format is getting stale.
Not that anyone has asked my advice, but here goes: Next year’s event needs to include players of color, like in past competitions, or women. There certainly is no shortage of popular black NFL or NBA players who could go head to head with Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady for 18 holes. Generally speaking, women don’t hit the ball as far as Phil Mickelson or Bryson DeChambeau do, but their approach shots and putting skills are equally as sharp. So is their wit.
The Match is a unique way for fans to enjoy watching golf and raise money for charity. It’s time Capital One steps up and gives the event a much needed face lift.
