Last year, hundreds of COVID cases in at least 12 states were directly tied to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota. No one knows how many new cases will turn up in the next several weeks, but given that 700,000 people are expected to attend this summer’s rally compared to 462,000 in 2020 — coupled with how easily the Delta (i.e., Trump) variant is spreading — I'm guessing the 2021 rally will result in many more COVID cases than last year.
One sure way to prevent the spread of the virus now is to require all bikers to remain in Sturgis for two weeks or longer. How to do this? Impound all their motorcycles. Don't let the owners ride back home until they can prove they are COVID-negative. In my opinion, people who ride into Sturgis are taking a calculated risk of contracting the virus. What they don't have the right to do is return home and spread the disease to family members or unsuspecting friends, shop owners and colleagues at work.
I like to have fun as much as the next person. The only difference is I'm willing to take responsibility for my actions. I wonder if those attending this year's motorcycle rally are willing to remain in Sturgis and help curb the spread of COVID?
