Several days ago, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) was videotaped making disparaging, anti-Muslim comments about one of her congressional colleagues (Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota). Today, a second video, taped in September, was released wherein Boebert made similar remarks about Omar. This time she added that the Minnesota lawmaker was a "black-hearted, evil woman." As I write this, there has been no public comment from House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy about the congresswoman's hateful remarks.
Now before you crucify me for not mentioning Rep. Maxine Waters' comments about Donald Trump or President Lyndon Johnson's legendary, curse-filled tantrums in the White House, let me ask: If a Democratic member of Congress called one of his or her colleagues a Jap, Beaner, Chink, Kike or the N-word, how long do you think it would take Speaker Nancy Pelosi to publicly rebuke that person (like she did Waters)?
So why won't Republican Kevin McCarthy call out Boebert for her crude and ugly comments? If I had to guess, I'd say it's because he privately (and tragically) agrees with her. Either that, or he now believes anything goes in today's political world -- including long-held, congressional principles of decorum and decency.
What says you?
