Re “Port of L.A. to join Long Beach in 24/7 operations,” Oct. 14
It’s about time the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach moved to 24/7 schedules. Next up, they need to find hundreds, if not thousands, of truck drivers to deliver the cargo now being offloaded day and night.
I have been a lifelong proponent of unions but I think it’s time to face reality: The Pentagon needs to deploy military drivers to Southern California in an effort to avoid any further disruption to the nation’s supply chain.
When natural disasters strike, the National Guard often is called in to help with cleanup activities or assist with the distribution of food or medical supplies. Knowing this, if personnel from all branches of the military start driving trucks, then millions of customers will receive their back orders long before the holidays.
Yes, this could be the year Santa arrives wearing camouflage fatigues.

I totally agree and frankly was surprised that our Ports weren’t operating 24/7. Also, we have a ton of military right now with no particular charge. They should be used at the ports and driving trucks, but of course the unions will scream.
So many people looking for jobs. The union should have an active recruiting and training program for unloading containers and for truck drivers.
