Tuesday's fatal police shooting of Ma'Khia Bryant, a 16-year-old Black teenager in Columbus, Ohio, is a tragedy that never should have happened. Simply put, she did not deserve to be shot four times by Officer Nicholas Reardon. A single shot to one of young Ma'Khia's legs most likely would have forced her to the ground. At that point, Reardon could have rushed to her side, called for medical back-up, and saved her life. Instead, he pumped her full of lead. This shooting requires a thorough examination of police policies. What exactly prevents officers, like Reardon, from being trained to aim their weapons below someone's waist instead of at their stomach, chest, or head?
