Just like the Watergate break-in and cover up, the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection includes Orange County locals. Most of the major Watergate conspirators, like former President Richard Nixon, who often retreated to the Western White House in San Clemente, and local moneyman and Nixon attorney, Herb Kalmbach, have passed away. Chapman's John Eastman and U.C. Irvine's Peter Navarro, who used to live in Laguna Beach where I reside, still are with us but probably would prefer to be living in a cave somewhere.
I was working on Capitol Hill in 1972, when The Washington Post published its initial 2" story about the break-in at the Democratic National Committee. Two years later, as pressure was mounting to impeach Nixon, I was a fundraiser for the DNC. Believe it or not, disgusted Republicans coast to coast were practically throwing money at my colleagues and me.
Donald Trump's Oval Office meetings with the likes of Navarro and other aides prior to, and the day of, last year's insurrection are a stark reminder that no one, not even the President of the United States, is above the law. Nixon's top aides, Bob Haldeman and John Ehrlichman, basically tried to convince the beleagured president that his remaining in office was more important than the search and siezure principles outlined in the 4th Amendment or the illegal deployment of CIA agents (i.e., spies) on American soil. Thankfully, Sen. Barry Goldwater saw things differently. In the end, it was the Arizona lawmaker who convinced Nixon to resign instead of being impeached.
If you recall, Eastman and Rudy Giuliani, Trump's Mr. Fixit, were busy gaslighting the crowd prior to the riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6. What we didn't know a year ago, but do know today is this: Navarro had, by his own admission, lined up a hundred members of Congress to decertify the Electoral College results with the expressed intent of preventing the peaceful transfer of power from Trump to Joe Biden. Could anyone or anything be more corrupt?
What is it about their Orange County connections that make former presidents or several of their key advisors believe they are above the law? My hope is the House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection will be able to answer this question sooner rather than later.
