My first Camp David gun summit letter to the editor was published by the Boston Globe in 2016, back when Obama was president. Since then, my letters urging Presidents Trump and Biden to convene gun summits have run in the New York Times, Austin American-Statesman, New York Post, Orange County Register, Los Angeles Times, Daily Pilot and other publications.
Today, with the help of 20 Laguna friends, we are taking the Camp David gun summit idea to a new level (click on the link below to see the full-page ad in today's Laguna Independent). Our plan is two-fold: First send the ad to Senators Dianne Feinstein and Alex Padilla (as well as Katie Porter who represents Laguna in the House); and second, ask each of them to forward the ad to the White House.
Some say promoting the notion of a gun summit at Camp David is a fool's errand. I don't believe these naysayers. The only way we won't succeed is if we give up ... and that, my friends, is not an option. If you agree, then here's how you can help: First, advertise in your local paper like we have; and second, send your ad to your Senators and House member and ask them to forward it to the White House.
To make things easy, simply copy the text in our Open Letter to President Biden (or edit it to fit your needs). No matter if you live in Port Townsend, Spokane, Petaluma, San Jose, Santa Barbara, East Lansing, Highland Park, Des Moines, Gettysburg or Greenwich, the president needs to hear our collective voices.
Many thanks for considering this request. If you have any questions, please email me. I'll walk you through our experience (including the cost of the ad and how much each co-signer contributed). In the meantime, I hope you have a happy and safe 4th of July.
