Re "Mater Dei president asks for trust after report of hazing left football player with brain injury," Nov. 24
Joe Paterno, the winningest football coach in NCAA history, was dismissed after the Penn State child sex abuse scandal broke in 2011. Larry Nassar was sentenced to literally hundreds of years in prison for sexually abusing young women when he worked at Michigan State and for the U.S. national women's Olympic gymnastics team. The common threads linking the Paterno and Nassar cases are abuse and institutional cover up.
Now the hot lights are focused on coach Bruce Rollinson and Mater Dei following the Orange County Register's detailed reporting about hazing. You know the phrase, "No one is above the law?" I believe the same principle should apply to high schools and universities as well. Instead of the president of the private, Catholic, secondary school asking for "faith and trust," Mater Dei needs to quickly do the right thing: Release Rollinson and anyone else who knowingly turned a blind eye to the incident.
