Today’s New York Post is running several letters in support of Pete Hegseth. Here are two of them. Not surprisingly, I have a different view. You'll find it below.
Senate confirmation hearings for Defense Secretary-designate Pete Hegseth.
Democrats have acted disrespectfully during this confirmation hearing (“Hegseth braves Senate smears,” Jan. 15).
Today’s American military seems to revolve too much around the basis of race and gender identity, and is governed by those who push DEI narratives. Pete Hegseth, if confirmed as Defense secretary, will cure this nonsense and return this nation’s military apparatus to a meritocracy-based war-fighting system.
Earl Beal, Terre Haute, Ind.
If Pete Hegseth is not confirmed as secretary of Defense, then the senators voting against him should be ashamed.
His qualifications and academic record fully make him a great fit for the position, especially because of his many tours in Afghanistan and his record of going to two Ivy League schools. Our country needs Hegseth to run the Defense Department. He has what it takes to get the job done.
Ann Pooler Barbera, Fort Pierce, Fla.
Here's my letter (which hasn't been published by any paper yet).
"Senators confront Trump's Pentagon nominee"
I'm guessing there are no Senate Republicans willing to scuttle Donald Trump's nominee for Secretary of Defense. If only four-star Gen. Colin Powell still was alive. My guess is the former Vietnam combat officer, White House national security advisor, and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff would have plenty to say to today's GOP lawmakers about Pete Hegseth's lack of qualifications for the job. Powell wasn't perfect, but he knew perfectly well what kind of person should lead the Pentagon. I am confident he would say, by all military accounts, Hegseth is not the right person for the job.
Denny Freidenrich, Laguna Beach, Calif.
I’m not convinced that General Powell would oppose Pete Hegseth. But I am convinced that he would have serious reservations about Biden Cabint secretaries Alejandro Mayorkas who seems to want to let anyone enter our border; AG Merrick Garland whose department was weaponizrd against his boss’s political enemies; and Pete Buttigieg who is hardly competent. That’s the Pete that we should all say no too!!!
All of trump's nominees will get through. The Senate may flex its muscle with Tulsi Gabbard, feeling that they give trump everything and they have to oppose something so they don't look like they are trump's marionettes.
