I posted the following on Facebook 2 years ago today. Too bad the former president didn’t live up to his promise.
TODAY IS FLAG DAY. Here are my thoughts ...
If defeated in November, Trump says he will leave White House peacefully.
I have been a student of politics since the 1960s. Never in my adult lifetime have I ever heard a sitting president say he will leave the White House peacefully if defeated in his bid for reelection.
But that is exactly what Donald Trump told Fox News Friday. Mr. Trump's statement is chilling. It's something you might hear from the leader of a banana republic, but never from a President of the United States.
From elementary school elections to voting for the highest office in the land, the peaceful transfer of power is what sets us apart from much of the world. It is, in so many ways, our North Star.
So let's all take a step back and think about what Abraham Lincoln said decades ago. It is as true today as it was in his day. “The ballot is stronger than the bullet.” Truer words were never spoken.

As much as I'd like to think Abe's words still hold up, looking at what's happening today makes me wonder. As far as the Republican 'Patriot' Party is concerned, the opposite is true - bullets are now more important than ballots. That's still a minor, but seemingly growing, part of our national fabric. From the 70's "radical left" to the 20's radical right, things are changing rapidly. Can the center hold?
