I don't believe the country is in jeopardy of imploding if Donald Trump is indicted. What concerns me more is how some GOP lawmakers, like Rep. Jim Jordan and Senator Rand Paul, are reacting. Earlier today, Paul tweeted that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg “should be put in jail.”
Scores of office holders, from Main Street to Congress, have been indicted for crimes over the years. Many have served time in prison. I don't recall Republicans tripping over themselves to save any of them.
Trump is accused of committing a crime when he was a private citizen. As president, he was shielded from being investigated. Now that he is a private citizen again, that protection no longer exists.
If you believe in the time-honored principle that no one is above the law, then let the system play out. I understand many people think Bragg is a partisan hack, but what about the jurors? If there is a trial and they find Trump guilty, will people say the same thing about them?
