Having served as a congressional staff assistant on Capitol Hill in 1972, and written about both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue ever since, I know first-hand how a bill becomes a law. The more graphic description of this process is often referred to as "how sausage is made."
I respect and admire Nancy Pelosi but wish the Speaker, and President Biden, hadn't called for votes on both the bipartisan infrastructure and Build Back Better "sausages" on Friday. Had they been brought to the House weeks apart, I doubt the dueling progressive vs. moderate members of Congress could have delayed the votes like they did.
Americans want their elected representatives in Washington to work, not posture. Imagine sitting down and ordering sausage and eggs for breakfast at your favorite cafe, only to be told there will be an eight-hour delay because two chefs in the kitchen can't agree on which sausage to serve (for example German Bratwurst, Spanish Chorizo or Polish Kielbasa to name a few).
In the future, if this ever happens to me, you can bet I'll be asking for an old fashioned hot dog to go. It won’t be exactly what I wanted, but it’ll have to do.
