According to an article in The Hill, House Republicans are casting aside the possibility that the Department of Justice could indict former President Trump for his conduct on Jan. 6, painting the DOJ as a political body.
“There’s nothing here to charge him with and they know it,” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said when asked if he was concerned about Trump being criminally charged.
McCarthy went on to say, “The one thing we know about the DOJ is how political they’ve become, and they’ve got to stop being political.”
Among the many House Republicans agreeing with McCarthy is Rep. Jim Banks of Indiana. Here’s what he recently said, “It’s clear at this point that the DOJ has been so highly politicized that this is an example of their lack of focus on criminal justice, keeping Americans safe and secure — and their political vendetta against the former president, which is shameful. We have a moral duty when we get the majority back to investigate the DOJ.”
Funny how deeply baked-in partisan amnesia has become among House Republicans. I guess they have forgotten how Donald Trump wanted to name Jeffrey Clark as head of the DOJ in the last days of his administration. And who was Clark? A loyal Trump believer in the Big Lie about the 2020 election results.
I was too young to understand Sen. Joe McCarthy’s “commie” smear tactics of the early 1950s, but I hung on every word of the Watergate hearings 20 years later. In both cases, I imagine supporters of McCarthy and Richard Nixon believed their “nothingburgers” would soon pass. Hardly. McCarthy was censured by the Senate and Nixon resigned the presidency.
I wonder what fate awaits Donald Trump?
