My heart is heavy. More than a colossal intelligence failure leading to the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, this "forever war" will be remembered for the enormously flawed thinking about who will and how to "govern" there. America's $2 trillion investment in Afghanistan clearly hasn't paid the political or military dividends we expected.

They say there are no coincidences in life. Tell that to the former Afghan government and New York's disgraced governor. As Americans, we were focused on one man's fate while millions of Afghans were waking up to the Taliban overrunning their country. For all intents and purposes, President Ashraf Ghani and Gov. Andrew Cuomo are gone now. Both took about a week to make up their minds. I realize Cuomo's bruised ego pales in comparison to Ghani's possible execution; still, once both leaders realized there virtually was no support for them to remain in office, it's amazing how quickly they decided to depart. It is my hope, going forward, calmer heads will prevail in both Kabul and Albany.
